While you might think of a pot when it comes to growing plants, orchids are in a unique little echelon of their own. Orchid media is typically fibrous and very loose, and unlike traditional potting soil, will not spill out of a specially designed orchid basket with the proper weave. Most importantly, baskets allow for better drainage than almost all pots, offer exceptional air circulation around the plant’s roots, and easily shed excess water. They also allow plenty of light to reach the orchid’s roots, which is optimal for plant health.
